Identifying the problem...
If you're a smoker you probably tell yourself every year end that this is it, THIS IS THE YEAR I WILL QUIT SMOKING! A few of us will kick the habit this year and never touch another cigarette again. Most of us will stop for a few seconds, hours, days, weeks, months, years...maybe? Then before you know it you're lighting up another one. Let's face it, quitting smoking is pretty difficult for most people...but, why?
...is it, a chemical addiction?
When you're lighting up that leafy tobacco-filled cancer stick, there's a substance that is naturally found in the plant called nicotine. Nicotine is an extremely addictive chemical that triggers the release of "happiness chemicals" in the brain. Once you put it into your body, your brain will crave more of it over time. The more you put in, the more your brain will want it, like a snow-ball effect. This is why smoking during stressful moments go hand-in-hand for most people. While nicotine isn't the most dangerous part of tobacco smoking, it certainly keeps you coming back for more of the dangerous stuff.
...is it, a bad habit?
Smokers tend to form habits that can be difficult to break. For example; Hot cup of coffee? Time for a smoke. Sitting in traffic? Time for a smoke. Waiting for the bus? Time for a smoke. Just had a meal? Time for a smoke. Just rebuilt an engine? Time for a smoke. Extremely bored? Time for a smoke. Don't know what to do for the next 10 minutes? Time for a smoke. Eventually, you assign smoking with daily activities which over time become habits that can be very difficult to break.
...maybe you just like the way it feels?
Some people really enjoy the feeling of smoke entering and leaving their mouth and lungs. It's like "ahh, feels so good". Though really, it's "AHH! I'm killing myself slowly but surely!".
Searching for the solution...
Addiction to smoking can be chemical, habitual, psychological, emotional or a combination of all of the above. There are many types of smokers and this makes it quit difficult to create a single solution to address all the causes and symptoms of smoking addiction. Until now...
...the Nicotine Gums
Nicotine gums have been around for quite some time now and are still a decent alternative to tobacco smoking. The gums address your nicotine cravings as well as the oral habits, where chewing would substitute having a cigarette in your mouth. However, chewing nicotine gum is not without it's risks as there are many short term and long term side effects. Some people may even continue to smoke while chewing the gum, which could lead to serious health risks and nicotine overdose. Gums can also be misleading in the presence of children so it's best to keep them out of reach of the little ones and use them according to the instructions provided.
...Nicotine Patches and Prescriptions Drugs
Nicotine patches and prescriptions drugs are also an effective means to curbing your nicotine cravings, however, they do not address the habits that most smokers develop, such as becoming accustomed to having something in the hand or in the mouth during certain activities throughout the day. There are also many side-effects associated with the patches and prescriptions drugs, both short term and long term. These include, but are not limited to, dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, weakness, insomnia, strange and sometimes terrifying dreams and other psychological conditions like depression. Fortunately, there are other solutions...
...the Electronic Nicotine Delivery Device
The electronic nicotine delivery device (ENDD) or electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) have helped a great many people kick the habit. More commonly known as the e-cig or electronic cigarette, these devices are about as close as you can get to imitating the act of tobacco smoking, without actually setting anything on fire and inhaling/exhaling smoke. They are battery-powered devices that heat up a nicotine solution to produce an aerosol that can then be inhaled. The nicotine is then absorbed by the lungs as with tobacco smoking, minus the over 3000 harmful chemicals found in a traditional tobacco cigarette. This process has been dubbed "vaping" and it addresses all the problems of chemical addiction, oral and hand habits of having something in the mouth or hands during certain activities, as well as the feeling of "smoke" entering and leaving the mouth and lungs.
There are little-to-no side-effects known to be caused by vaping with premium products made by trusted manufacturers. Many vapes are also available with zero nicotine and the mere inhalation and exhalation of the vapor can be enough for some people to substitute tobacco smoking, all-together.
Choosing the right solution...
Electronic cigarettes (ecigs) are available in a wide variety of shapes, styles, makes and models. Many "vapers" started vaping without any history of tobacco smoking, while others turned to vaping as a means to substitute tobacco smoking. Unlike the gums, patches and prescription drugs, e cigs are constantly evolving in their design and function to cater to the diverse crowd of consumers that seek them.
Ecigs and ecig refills can be found in a wide variety of flavors, such as traditional tobacco and menthol flavors, as well as fun fruity flavors such as strawberry, apple, mango; Even gourmet or exotic flavors like caramel biscuit or tropical fruit mixes. Nicotine strengths are also in wide variety, ranging from 0 nicotine to 50mg by volume. By comparison, 1 tobacco cigarette has around 1-2mg of nicotine by volume.
Cig-a-likes are electronic cigarettes that are similar in size and appearance to a traditional tobacco cigarette. They can be found as disposable units that are purchased and vaped until empty, then thrown away. Cig-a-likes can also be found as rechargeable units, where a rechargeable battery is used with a disposable cartomizer (cartridge). Once the cartridge is vaped until empty, it is thrown away and more cartridges are purchased. Once the battery loses all power, it can be recharged back to full and used again with the new cartridges.
Cig-a-likes address the chemical addiction to nicotine, with a wide range of nicotine options you can start high and work your way down until ultimately switching to zero nicotine options, or start with zero nicotine and convince yourself that you are vaping with nicotine. Cig-a-likes also address the oral and hand habits, since they feel like a real cigarette in the hand and mouth.
A downside of this type of electronic cigarette is the vapor production. Because of their size, they produce minimal vapor relative to other types of ecigs. This could be a deal-breaker for some vapers and smokers who desire thick, full clouds on the inhale and exhale.
...the E Hookah
Similar to cig-a-like ecigs, ehookah's are also found as disposable or rechargeable units. They also can have the appearance of a traditional tobacco cigarette, though sometimes they have a more pen-like appearance and as a result have earned names such as "hookah pen" or "hookah stick". The main difference between a cig-a-like and e-hookah would be the flavors, as hookah tobaccos tend to be a mix of hybrid tobaccos and wild flavoring such as double apple or berrymist.
E hookah can address the chemical addiction although they tend to be available in zero or low nicotine options. So if it's all about the nicotine for you, an e hookah may not be your best substitute. They are also pretty minimal on vapor production as well, so no thick clouds on the inhale and exhale here.
...the Vape Pen
Vape pens are electronic cigarettes that look similar to a large writing pen, hence the name that stuck. They tend to be a bit bulkier than most cig-a-likes and e-hookahs, and that's because they have a greater battery capacity, which means you get more puffs out of them before having to recharge the battery.
Most vape pens use a clearomizer, or a clear tank that can be filled and refilled with vape juice. This affords you the ability to mix and match different e juice flavors and nicotine strengths to create your own unique blends to suit your preferences. Alternatively, some vape pen manufacturers offer pre-filled, sealed capsule cartridges or clearomizer tanks with ready made e juice blends. One advantage of this type of system is to avoid having to deal with changing atomizers, coils and e juice.
Vapor production from vape pens are decent, producing moderate clouds that usually can satisfy a heaver smoker. They can also address the chemical addiction to nicotine as the refills are available with many nicotine options ranging from zero nicotine to very high amounts of nicotine. In addition, as with all electronic cigarettes, replacing a cigarette in the hand or mouth with an ecig is no difficult task at all, so they make for an excellent substitute.
...the Pod Mod
Pod mods are electronic cigarettes that utilize a pod tank system. The pod tank would be where the vape juice is stored for vaping. Pod mods are usually flat, rectangular-shaped units baring the resemblance to a USB flash drive. The flat shape allows for slightly more battery capacity than with a cig-a-like, but less than with most vape pens.
Pod mods have taken the industry by storm because of their elegant designs and simplicity of use. They were also the first systems to utilize nicotine-salt based vape juice solutions, which were easier on the throat on the inhale and exhale. Some people also believe nicotine-salts are better absorbed by the body, but research has shown this to be untrue.
Pod tanks are available as pre-filled units, ready-to-vape, while some are refillable tanks that can hold any vape juice of your liking. The pod tanks have a smaller capacity for vape juice than with vape pens that use refillable clearomizers and pre-fiilled capsules, however.
They can certainly address your nicotine cravings with refill options ranging from zero to very high nicotine levels. Oral and hand habits are easily substituted and the vapor production can vary from moderate to pretty decent, making pod mods an excellent alternative to tobacco smoking.
...Box & Tube Mods
Modified vaporizers or "mods" are advanced electronic cigarettes that are loaded with features to allow for a more customizable vaping experience. For this reason, they are not recommended to those who are new to vaping as there is some technical knowledge required to use these devices properly and safely. You should have some basic knowledge of these types of devices by carefully reading their instruction manuals and adhering to them, as well as some knowledge of lithium-ion batteries. Failure to educate yourself on these products prior to use could result in damage to the unit and even to yourself.
Mod vapes are generally found in two styles, both of which utilize a clearomizer tank to hold any vape juice of your liking. The first style is the box mod, because of their box-like appearance. The second style is the tube mod, because of their tube-like or cylindrical design.
With the ability to mix and match different vape juice flavors and nicotine strengths and built-in features like temperature control, variable voltage and wattage, air-flow controls; mods allow you to customize your vape experience to cater your preferences. Some mods even have rebuild-able atomizers allowing for further fine-tuning of your vape experience.
Mods can certainly address your chemical addiction to nicotine, even more so than with most other types of electronic cigarettes. They also solve the problem of oral and hand habits as well as vapor production. These devices are capable of producing very thick clouds of vapor that most users find very satisfying.
Some downsides of using mods however, are they can be a bit pricey in terms of initial cost and maintenance as you will be required to purchase vape juice, atomizers and other parts and accessories as needed. They can also be a bit bulky and messy to handle, as well as dangerous if you're not familiar with their mechanics and usage.
If you've tried the gum, the patches, prescription drugs and other methods to try to cut-back or completely kick the habit but to no avail, consider using an electronic cigarette. Here are our recommendations for types of e-cigs that address the different types of reasons a person can be addicted to tobacco smoking...
